Wanted: True Worshipers John 4:16-26
Introduction Mission statements are everywhere. Schools have them, hospitals have them, restaurants have them, and even the license bureau has one. It might not be wide of the mark to suggest that the chief mission of the Christian is to worship God. We see this stressed throughout the Bible: 1. In the garden, we saw the test of worship.

2. Moses received 10 famous words from God which functioned as commandments of worship. 3. The Israelites were to set up the tabernacle in the middle of their encampment, no doubt showing the centrality of worship.

4. The temple was filled with smells and smoke indicating the sacrifices of worship.

5. The psalms and other works functioned as books of worship.

6. The post-exilic prophets had to try to re-institute proper worship.

7. When Christ came He showed us how important worship was by attending it regularly.

8. The early church found a reason to change the day of worship.

9. The epistles functioned partly as a liturgy of worship.

10. And, Revelation ends with the rejoinder, “Worship God!” In the encounter that Jesus had with the woman at the well, we see more “worship talk” per square inch than anywhere else in the Bible.

I. Notice Who Is Talking About Worship. A. It is not a theologian, not a Bible College professor, not a preacher, not an elder, not a Bible school teacher.

B. It is a morally wounded woman. That doesn’t sound right. But maybe that is the point. The only people who will worship will be the people who sense their need to worship. At least this woman does that.

C. This morally wounded woman is undone as she talks about worship. She is the one who brings up the topic. But she is stopped in her tracks when Jesus says, “Go call your husband.” Worship will never be popular, because we have to face God, and when we do that we have to face ourselves in light of God. That will undo the best of us.

II. Notice What Worship Is Not. A. While we may want to know what worship is Jesus only defines it by the power of negation. Maybe He is more interested in us doing worship than merely defining it. In fact, one way to kill some things is to say, “Webster says…”

B. Worship is not: 1. Geography … it can be done anywhere.

2. Race … the woman was a Samaritan.

3. Anything and everything … Jesus said, “You worship what you do not know.” There is such a thing as wrong worship.

4. Terminology … the main word here means to “bow down,” but we dare not get lost in mere lexical studies.

5. Enthusiasm … ”in spirit” means something different than “clap your hands.”

III. Notice How Worship Is Done. A. In spirit, i.e. In sincerity of heart and attitude. While true worshipers worship God in Spirit (Philippians 3), here it is referring to a state of the heart.

B. In truth, i.e. In genuineness. Of course, we want to worship God according to the Bible, but Jesus is talking about a state of the heart. IV. Notice What Worship Leads to.

A. It leads to a further disclosure of God. The point of John 4 is not to give us a manual of personal evangelism. As the woman talks about worship with Jesus, He is revealed. This fits the Gospel’s purpose (20:30-31). First, she sees Him be just a man, then a prophet, then the Messiah, and finally the Savior of the world.

B. It leads to world evangelism. Worship should always drive us into the fields of harvest. If we know Him, then we must seek to make Him known.
Conclusion Someone once said, “A Christian should be hallelujah from head to toe.” As our perception of Christ grows the only appropriate response is worship. God is looking for such a one as yourself.

Jesus said, you honor me with your lips, however, your heart is far from me. Ask your heart on today, so I honor, the Lord in my heart, spirit, and soul? Or do I honor him with your mouth?

Once you get your honest answers, start worshiping in Spirit and Truth.

  • This is a very special topic for me, and as I have grown in God, it comes from being a true worshiper after learning how to worship God from my heart. Not worshiping him from deceitfulness, or pretending; but from a pureness, even in desperation; we have to know that with desperation it will draw you unto him. My God, when I was at the lowest point in my life, that is where my truth came forth. Out of brokenness, anger, disappointments, rejection, I had to go deeper, and worship brought me to a deep place with God. As stated here

    1. It is a morally wounded woman. That doesn’t sound right. But maybe that is the point. The only people who will worship will be the people who sense their need to worship. At least this woman does that.

It might not of sound correct, or in order, but I know that I had a need of something to shift in my life, a need to know who Jesus really was, not by here-say, or read in a book, an honest, up front knowing from my experiences. All this we read in our class, for instance:

As we begin to come close, honest with God, telling the truth, face to face with our sins, real-less-ness, we can move from one state of knowing Him to another, until we know that He is the Savor of this world.

    1. This morally wounded woman is undone as she talks about worship. She is the one who brings up the topic. But she is stopped in her tracks when Jesus says, “Go call your husband.” Worship will never be popular, because we have to face God, and when we do that, we have to face ourselves in light of God. That will undo the best of us.

    Awesome read, My God…

  • Amen honor and worship in spirit and in truth. Be honest and true to yourself. And to God.

  • AMEN we as Children of GOD has to know that we know that we are not only Worshiping with our mouth but with our Heart,Mind and our Spirit and our Soul AMEN this is so Powerful teaching.

  • We should Praise God each and everyday for who he is and what he is to us.  This shows our love and commitment to him.  He wants us to open up and let him in

  • John 4: 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”  (The Spirit Of Truth is The Holy Spirit).

John 16: 13 However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come. 14He will glorify Me by taking from what is Mine and disclosing it to you.…

John 14:17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you.

  • Wanted Ad(Calling forth True Worshipers)

I am willing to take the Job as a worshiper. I will worship Him with my whole heart, mind and soul. We need always to worship, this will brings God to the room. I beleive women responds more to worship because of how they are wired. We all must worshiping in Spirit and Truth. The women I believe are more sensitive to the spirit of God which make them more easier to yield to His presence. We as men most of the time try to think everything out, internalize things in our head. However we are getting much better at worship.

  • Worship God with a sincere heart, no matter the time or place. Sing praises onto His Holy name. Thank You Lord for allowing me to bask in Your presence.

  • AMEN it is required of every believer to worship the Lord our GOD in SPIRIT and in TRUTH. Therefore, we must declutter our minds and let GOD in so that he can reveal us to ourselves. For the Lord our GOD is worthy of true worship

  • Amen. I have always loved worship and where God has me it’s amazingly out of this world. During worship service people say God speaks to them in a loud or soft voice. Well God speaks to with colors. As I worship I close my natural eyes but my spiritual eyes are wide open. That’s the amazing thing about God is that each one of us are unique in the spirit. I mean I enter into a realm that I don’t feel as if I am in my natural body.
