The Purpose of Fasting

The purpose of fasting is to produce a change in us for a clear, more focused attention and dependence on God. During a spiritual fast, your focus is removed from the physical things of this world and intensely concentrated on God; directing our hunger toward God and not food and the things of the world. We are to set loose to the things of the world. It doesn't mean we are not to have things, just don't let the things have a hold of us. You will gain spiritual clarity of thought while fasting, it allows you to hear God more clearly. Allow fasting to demonstrate your profound need for God's help and guidance through complete dependence upon him. Pray and seek the Lord in this time of submission and consecration to God.

Decide what to fast about, that will be between you and God. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance. Pray and read the bible daily, and praise and worship God daily.

What to expect when you fast: You body detoxifies, eliminating toxins from your system. This can cause mild discomfort, such as headaches and irritability during withdrawal from caffeine and sugars. Naturally, you will have hunger pains. Limit your activity and exercise moderately. Take time to rest. Fasting brings miraculous results. You are following Jesus' example when you fast. Spend time listening to praise and worship music. Pray as often as you can throughout the day. Get away from the normal distractions as much as possible and keep your heart and mind set on seeking God's face. If you have health concerns, consult your doctor prior to beginning a fast. This is particularly important if you take prescription medications.

Types of Fast: Full fast is when you drink only liquids, water, 100% juice and clear broth (you ask God the number of days in your prayer time) and consult your doctor.

Daniel Fast: You will eat no meats, no sweets, and no bread. You can eat fruits, nuts, vegetables, beans, peas, and drink only water.

Three day Fast: This fast can be any type of fast (full fast, Daniel fast, you can give up one food fast).

Partial fast: This fast is from 6 am - 3 pm, or from sun-up to sundown. A partial fast can also be any type of fast.

How to End Your Fast: Don't over eat when the time comes to end your fast. Begin by eating smaller portions of food or snacks. God bless each of you in your journey of fasting.
