From Worship Leader to Mayor, Woman Follows God's Voice by Teresa Neumann : Jan 20, 2011 : Polly House - Baptist Press News "I told God I wasn't even sure I wanted to be mayor, with politics being what it is and all. But then God let me know He was just asking me to run. He didn't tell me I was going to win." (Ridgecrest, NC)—Rita Stephens is a member of Mt. Eden Baptist Church in Hawesville, Kentucky: population—about 1,000 people. Speaking recently at the National Women's Leadership Forum hosted by LifeWay Christian Resources at LifeWay Ridgecrest Conference Center near Asheville, NC, Stephens shared about how she wasn't sure she wanted to be mayor of Hawesville when she heard God tell her to "run" for the position. (Photo: Courthouse in Hawesville, KY) As reported in Baptist Press News, when Stephens was elected Mayor—after entering the race late, as a write-in—she had to give up her position as worship leader in her church. "God just spoke to me and told me I needed to run," she said. "I told God I wasn't even sure I wanted to be mayor, with politics being what it is and all. But then God let me know He was just asking me to run. He didn't tell me I was going to win." Stephens also noted that a teaching by Kelly Minter at a conference on Women's Ministry and Mission struck a chord with her. "She reminded us that it's time we get up and get out, not just stay in our churches and isolate ourselves from the people outside."
