  • Why did jesus say, be "wise as serpents and humble as doves" ? According to Matthews 10:16 God said, " Look I'm sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as serpents and harmless as doves." Because, He wanted them to be wise and make "good choices" due to danger they were about to encounter. Yet, still remain humble in the face of adversity.  Because, God is still in control of every circumstance & situation.  Inspite of him allowing them to walk in their call & purpose with the gifts he has given them.  They still must remain obedient to him & know that he is in control and they are servants of him.

  • The Lord was warning the disciples to be prepared for persecution. To avoid all things which give the enemy any advantage over them. Avoid any kind of evil, selfishness or underhanded things. Persecutions are coming and they will be viscous. Expect it not only from your enemies but from your friends and relatives also.
Followers of Christ are hated. They will be sought out so they need to be as wise as the enemy, yet harmless as doves. Don't hurt anyone and bear no one any ill-will.
Keep faith and cast all cares upon the Lord!
  • To understand this one must understand how serpents operate.  Being wise as serpents mean that you have studied the enemy, having watched him and await the opportunity to move in.  They are listeners, and operate patiently.  Doves do not touch unclean or dead things.  They are affectionate, gentle, peacemakers, and they are not bitter.  We must not allow situations to tempt us, but we must stay before God and keep peace.  The dove has so many great christian characteristics and displays such self control.

  • When I looked up the word Serpent in the Bible Genesis 3:1 the word Crafty jumped out at me. I looked up the definition of the words wisdom and humble.

Crafty - skill, cunning, skilled trader, members of a trade, manual trade.

Wisdom - sagacious, having intelligence, and knowledge.

Humble - not proud, lowly, modest, bring low, abase.

God is telling us to be wise like the serpent. The serpent is crafty, he is skilled, he uses his words wisely. He is cunning. God wants us to use wisdom when we are dealing with his sheep. Everyone is different so the approach has to be individualized. The serpent is intelligent and has knowledge, he studies and knows his target. God wants us to know those we labor amongst.

God is telling us to be humble as a dove. A dove is humble, obedient and focused on what his job is. In the story of Noah the dove was sent out a total of 3 times. On the 1st time the dove came back cause there was no where to set his feet. The second time the dove had a olive branch in its beak and on the 3rd and final time the dove did not return. One the 1st or the 2nd time the dove could have just stayed gone, but instead he came back as a humble servant doing what he was sent out to do. On the 3rd time he knew his job was completed so he did not return.

God is telling his disciples as well as us to be wise yet humble. We must have understanding of what he is telling us, seek knowledge and use wisdom in every situation.

  • When you think about high-risk jobs, what comes to mind? How about President Obama, soldiers, stuntmen, race car drivers?  We don't  think of preachers or evangelists or pastor's as being exposed to high risks? Jesus did. When Jesus sent His disciples out to preach the gospel, heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead and cast out demons, Jesus told them that it would be dangerous work.  Jesus said to his disciples “Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves” (Matthew:10:16). when you think about it Jesus was saying “Stay alert. This is hazardous work I’m assigning you. You’re going to be like sheep running through a wolf pack”. That sounds pretty spooky to me.   Jesus was saying for us to be sweet, don't bite back, be harmless, try not to injure another with inflicting physical or mental damage. Be peaceful.  That's why God said many are called, but only few are chosen hand picked by the master himself.  Thank you, God for this revelation and wisdom.

  • Jesus wanted us to be wise as serpent, meaning when you go out to minister to the people put on your whole armor of "God". He knew that we needed to be alert and aware, because satan is always seeking to devour, cause shame & confusion, especially when he is trying to imitate God trying to fool the people & put doubt, but if we have our armor on we will be ready. To be humble as a Dove is to strive to walk in Jesus shoes, allowing the holy spirit to speak to us and through us with a humble, gentle loving spirit at all times. So if we do come up against a good or bad situation when speaking to someone about the word of God they will be open to receive because of our humility & kindness. It's like what my Mother taught me, You Have To Lead By Example.

  • to be wise as a serpent is to be skillful and tactful when it comes to your attack plan when the devil used the serpent to have adam and eve fall he had already did his study on man and realize that man was made up of flesh and  it had a weakness of always wanting more then what God had released to them  have dominion over every thing  .humble as a dove to have a heart of humility and gentle and be mindful that all have sin and falling short of his glory .

  • Jesus was the main example of why they should be wise as a serpent and humble as a dove. Serpents only attack when they feel threaten they would rather now become confrontational if they could they often try to avoid danger. They are very good at escaping among rocks and varies plants. What did Jesus often do when he felt threatened they would kill him he fleed to another city through the sea the disciples being with him should have realized this when he warned them. I didn't get humble for doves but I did get harmless doves are never confrontational they will take flight if they feel threatened but if they trust you enough they will watch you careful and allow you to either help them or go on about your business. Intern I believe Jesus did not want the disciples making a mess of things being a minister of the gospel you are a role model at all times you have eyes on you how can you preach the gospel and you are harming people? Jesus may have been slick and smooth with his answers and parables but not one time did he harm someone out of angry.

  • I believe being wise as serpent meant decerning and humble as doves mean being innocent and/or vulnerable.
  • Yes Jesus was preparing his disciples for ministry and all the opposition that they would face in their walk with him as well, He taught them everything they would need in order to survive and be victorious in all they had to do to advance the kingdom of God. I agree that when parents train their children up right when they leave the nest it will never depart from them, even when your children stray from your teaching it still remains with them how you brought them up and they will return to what they know after facing many trails.
