  • Hello Apostle. A serpant (Large snake or a sly or treacherous person, especially one who exploits a position of trust in order to betray it) Is wise, with a keen eye (clear, sensitive, or sharp) and is quick to learn. A dove (gentle, a person who advocate peacefully) is innocent, meek, and gentle. When the Holy spirit appeared, it would do so in the form of a dove. Jesus sent His 12 disciplines forth on the Great Commission, this was a necesary balancing act' why? Jesus sent them out like a sheep among wolves.

  • Hello!

Jesus told them to be wise as serpents, because he wanted them to be on guard and aware at all times to the tricks of the Devil.  Jesus wanted them to be humble as doves, because they were going out to save lost souls.  Jesus knew that if they were arrogant and full of themselves, they wouldn't be as effective.  The Dove represents The Holy Spirit.  According to St. Luke 3:22 NIV:  and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."  When you carry The Holy Spirit, you have to be humble, wise and be on guard for the enemy.  When you are wise as a serpent and humble as a dove, you will be effective in your ministry.

  • Jesus told his disciples to be wise as serpents and humble as doves, because he was sending them out to do the work he had called them to do (build His kingdom). Jesus knew there would be opposition and persecution so he wanted them to be wise as serpents to have keen insight or discernment to watch as well as pray but be harmless as a dove not rendering evil for evil.
  • Jesus gave his twelve disciples (Simon Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus Thaddaeus, Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot - vs 2 - 3) the POWER against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease (vs 1) and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel (vs. 5 - 6). And, as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand (vs. 7). Heal the preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand (vs. 8).

This was a great responsibility and equipping that He bestowed upon the disciples, so He had to forewarn them of that which the serpents which surely trick you into a life of sin, if they weren't careful and wise. Prior to this time, satan (lucifer) had already been kicked out of the Gardner and was always tempting others. Snakes are a sly and "crafty," but if we use the keys that The Lord has given us, then we shall surely not fall into the trap or wiles of the devil. The Lord forewarned them because He knew that satan would tempt them in every form, shape and fashion (i.e. wolf in sheep's clothing, trojan horse gifts, fear, etc.) and try to throw them off course of what The Lord had sent them out to do. He also told them to remain humble so that they would not be brought before the council and judged in the same manner He was (sentenced to death). Humble is the way!

  • The bible mentions that our weapons are not carnal but divinely powerful 2 Corinthians 10:4 and in 2 Cor 2 :11 mentions that we not ignorant of his devices. So I think that the wise as serpents has much to do with how we operate as believers that we aren't walking around without knowledge concerning who we are and how the enemy operates. harmless as doves I believe talks about walking and being lead by the Holy Spirit and through the Spirit of God we will be lead by the heart of God and not cause harm to the body of Christ .

  • Dont allow the enemy to outwit you, so be aware of your surroundings, and the plotting and scheming that goes on around you, they will not like you for His names sake, but when persecution comes, be humble, and not quick to lash out, consider some of it constructive criticism and a learning experience at that, and look to God as the Most High is in control of everything, and continue on with your mission until it be complete. Also a great way to look at it is, if you have the characteristic of a dove, one thing you have as a weapon is the ability to fly, verses only the snake, only being able slither to and fro. The snake may be wise and try and catch you slipping while you observing the world high up on life's branch, but if your also serpent minded, you would be able to detect the familiar sound of his slither up the tree, and once you know your enemy, oh how easier it is to arm yourself by simply not letting him get to close, but FLOP, and flying over to the next branch on the next tree, "Satan get thee behind me" now you got some time to regroup, and continue your bird call "Call to repentance and righteousness". Stay alert, because there's going to come a time when that same meek dove, is transfigured into an Eagle, and we all know the representation of EAGLES :-)

  • Jesus wanted his disciples to be aware of everything around them, to walk in spiritual discernment.  He wanted them to be wise and ready for anything that would come before them....

  • He was sending his disciples out as sheep among wolves. God wanted the disciples and us to remain alert while on this tedious journey. Jesus knew the work was hazardous that he had assigned the disciples to do. He told them they would be like running sheep through a wolf pack, don't call attention to yourselves. Be wise as serpent and harmless as doves, mean be aware of your surroundings, be watchful (clever as snakes) innocent as doves (stay focus). Jesus was aware of the danger and hardship his disciples would face as they live by faith. This is why Jesus relates this same statement to us so we may be aware of our circle and stay focus and don't lose hope.

  • I believe Jesus said it because they had to use wise discernment to know where the enemy was. There were going to be those who would reject the message and even try to kill them, so they has to be wise about where they went and where they shared the message. They also had to be as harmless as doves. They should minister in love and never try to force themselves or their message on anyone who didn't want it.
