THE NAMES OF GOD
In the Old Testament God revealed Himself by means of the various names by
which He called Himself. Three primary names for God appear in the Old
Testament--Elohim (El, Elah), Jehovah, and Adonai ( #Gen 1:1 2:4 15:2 ).
Together with these primary names are numerous compound names, as when
tributary thoughts are brought into conjunction with the main Elohim or
Jehovah streams. Consider, for instance, the wonderful compound names for
God in His character as Jehovah, the covenant-keeping God.
1. JEHOVAH-JIREH ( #Gen 22:14 )
"The Lord who provides" 2. JEHOVAH-SHALOM ( #Judg 6:24 )
"The Lord who gives peace"
3. JEHOVAH-ROPHEKA ( #Ex 15:26 )
"The Lord who heals" 4. JEHOVAH-TSIDKENU( #Jer 23:6 3:16)
"The Lord our righteousness"
5. JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH ( #Ezek 48:35 )
"The Lord who is there" 6. JEHOVAH-NISSI ( #Ex 17:15 )
"The Lord our banner"
7. JEHOVAH-MEKADDISHKEM
( #Ex 31:13 ) "The Lord who sanctifies"
NOTE: All these Jehovah titles are hidden in Psalm 23. It is a most instructive and heartwarming way to expound this psalm--just go through and illustrate each of these names of Jehovah in the words of David
Psalms 23 through the eyes of David
Psal 23:1 (KJS) A Psalm of David.
1 JEHOVAH-ROHI- is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 JEHOVAH-SHALOM- maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 JEHOVAH-ROPHEKA- restoreth my soul: JEHOVAH-TSIDKENU leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH [art] with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5 JEHOVAH-NISS-I preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: JEHOVAH-MEKADDISHKEM- anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of JEHOVAH for ever.
The next version of Psalms 23 .
A Psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
2 In pastures of tender grass He causes me to lie down: beside still waters He leads me.
3 My soul He refreshes; He guides me in the tracks of righteousness for the sake of His name.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will not fear evil; for thou art with me: Thy rod and Thy staff - they indeed comfort me.
5 Thou prepares before me a table in the presence of my assailants; thou anoints with oil my head: my cup overflows.
6 Surely, only goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life: and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord to the utmost length of days
Psalm 23 Amplified Version
1 The Lord is my shepherd[to feed, guide and shield me]; I shall not lack.
2 He makes me lie down in (fresh, tender) green pastures; He leads me beside the still and restful waters [ref. 7:17]
3 He refreshes and restores my life - myself; He leads me in the paths of righteousness [uprightness and right standing with Him - not my earning it, but] for His name sake.
4 Yes, though I walk through the [deep, sunless] valley of the shadow of death, I will fear or dread no evil; for You are with me; Your rod [to protect] and Your staff [to guide], they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my [brimming] cup runs over.
6 Surely or only goodness, mercy and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life; and through the length of days the house of the Lord [and His presence] shall be my dwelling place.
Psalm 23 Moffiatt Translation
23 The Eternal shepherds me, I lack for nothing
He makes me lie in meadows green,
he leads me to refreshing streams, he revives life in me.
He guides me by true paths, as he himself is true
My road may run through a glen of gloom, but I fear no harm, for thou art beside me:
thy club, thy staff—they give me courage.
Thou art my host, spreading a feast for me,
while my foes have to look on!
Thou hast poured oil upon my head
my cup is brimming over
yes, and all through my life
Goodness and Kindness wait on me
the Eternal’s guest within his household evermore.
