¹³ “Now, here is the king you have chosen, the one you asked for. See, Yahweh has put a king over you. ¹⁴ If you fear Yahweh, serve him, obey him, and don’t rebel against what Yahweh says, then you and your king will follow Yahweh your Elohim. ¹⁵ But if you don’t obey Yahweh, if you rebel against what Yahweh says, then Yahweh will be against you as he was against your ancestors. ¹⁶ Now then, stand still and watch this great thing Yahweh is going to do right before your eyes.

⁷ This is what you must do whenever there are poor Israelites in one of your cities in the land that Yahweh your Elohim is giving you. ⁸ Be generous to these poor people, and freely lend them as much as they need. Never be hard-hearted and tight-fisted with them.^[a]

⁹ When the seventh year—the year when payments on debts are canceled—is near, you might be stingy toward poor Israelites and give them nothing. Be careful not to think these worthless thoughts. The poor will complain to Yahweh about you, and you will be condemned for your sin. ¹⁰ Be sure to give to them without any hesitation. When you do this, Yahweh your Elohim will bless you in everything you work for and set out to do. ¹¹ There will always be poor people in the land. That’s why I command you to be generous to other Israelites who are poor and needy.

⁸ Christ makes me bold enough to order you to do the right thing. ⁹ However, I would prefer to make an appeal on the basis of love. But if you use your spiritual nature to put to death the evil activities of the body, you will live. ¹⁴ Certainly, all who are guided by God’s Spirit are God’s children.
