When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you (Matthew 6:16-18 NIV).
We are suppose to fast, but not like the hypocrites, who want to be seen and heard. We fast to put our flesh under subjection and to draw nigh to God. Fasting is the humbling of the soul, Psalm 35:13, that is an inside job and does not need to be displayed on the outside by man. The Father is the one that works on us from the inside out. We cannot do this for ourselves. This is the job of the Holy Spirit, which is God also. God sees in secret, in our inward parts, and he will reward openly. STAY HUMBLE!
