You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men (Matthew 5:13 NIV).
We, the disciples are to preserve the earth from moral decay. We are called to a prophetic work. We are to counteract sin by communicating the divine truths to oppose spiritual corruption and the powerlessness of men. And by all means we are to bring about moral soundness and the power of abundant life. If gifts, graces, blessings, a high calling, and a higher work fails, what remains?
The Talmud shows that the salt which had become unfit for sacrificial use in the store-house was sprinkled in wet weather upon the slopes and steps of the temple to prevent the feet of the priests from slipping. It was no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
If we, through failing to preserve the powers bestowed upon us and by allowing them to perish, become unfaithful to our destiny and unfitted for our calling, how will we raise ourselves again to the power and efficiency appropiate to our vocation which we have lost? Our uselessness for our calling will be irreparable. Wherewith shall we be made salty again? WE MUST WALK WORTHY OF OUR VOCATION!
