All men, women, and children are tripartite beings, consisting of a body, soul, and spirit. Dreams seem to emerge or develop more in the realm of the soul, whereas visions are deeper manifestations, which are conceived within the spirit of the person.
Whenever there is a strong outpouring of the Holy Spirit, there will always be an increase of spiritual revelation. In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams (Acts 2:17).
Why would young men see visions and old men dream dreams? I believe it is because the Spirit will be poured out on the youth, and this intense movement of the Spirit always increases the intensity and the sensitivity of the human spirit to the things of God. I believe the second reason has to do with the level of spiritual maturity. Because of years of personal experiences with the Lord, the old men have their senses trained to correctly discern the spiritual from the carnal, whereas a youth may not have the maturity to correctly discern or understand the deeper truth.
Young men need a vision - one so dramatic and clear that it becomes impossible for a young man to doubt it was from the Lord. An older. more experienced believer has a fine-tuned spirit and can quickly determine if the dream was from the Lord or not, and should know the symbolism in the Bible to determine the meaning of any spiritual dream.
