  The atmosphere is charged with demonic forces. When a person sleeps, if that person is under the influence of an unclean spirit, that spirit does not sleep when the person is sleeping, the evil spirit is free to enter and exit the person's body at will (Matt. 12:43). An example in the Bible is when king Saul was troubled by an evil spirit, and as David played the harp, the evil spirit departed from Saul, and he was "refreshed and well" (I Samuel 16:23). At a later time, the same spirit returned to Saul, and he attempted to kill David with a javelin (I Sam. 18:10-11). Only when David ministered to Saul through anointed music was the nervous king relieved from his mental oppression.

  When there is a very dark, almost depressing or oppressive spiritual presence. If you sense a very strong occult spirit, or a seductive spirit, strip clubs, forms of pornography, and drugs, these are strongholds for nightmares to occur. It appears that often the atmosphere in areas can be traced to the type of sins, iniquities, and carnal pleasures that dominate or control those living in those particular areas. Sin is more than a three-letter word. It involves carnal thoughts that lead to actions that impact a person and alter the person's personality, which in return alters the spiritual atmosphere. Where there are numerous believers influencing the morals and laws of a community, there will follow a spirit of peace and tranquility throughout the region. When drugs are being sold on street corners, gangs roam like hungry wolves, bars are filled with drunken men/women, and seducing spirits capture the imagination of the people, then a covering of spiritual evil can be felt when a person is awake and asleep. As it is written, "When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the people groan" (Prov. 29:2).

  If you enjoy bloodthirsty horror movies with vampires chewing human flesh an coloring their fangs with human blood, then never question why you are having terrible dreams at night. If you spend free time feeding your spirit violent programs, movies, or reading the latest "kill them and bury them" magazines, then when you begin dreaming that you are carrying a shotgun shooting up the innocents in the town, you have sights and sounds stuck in your head during the day whose wrong seeds are producing bad fruit in the night.

  Many people are drawn to a secret addiction - Internet pornography. In the past, full nudity was only available to purchase under the counter at certain stores or purchased as pay-per-view movies. The technology has now moved to the personal laptop, with thousands of images available with the click of the mouse. The mind can be easily pulled into the cyber world of pornography, cementing images on the brain that will never be removed without the power of God. Spouses will then go to bed with each other, uninterested in each others love and affection, having become rooted in an emotional affair with a lifeless, full-color image of a stranger. Peaceful sleep will turn into a tormenting nightmare or a dirty dream, which will leave even a loving spouse restless in the morning from a night journey in the world of the subconscious. Many homes are being wrecked because a man or woman became connected to a total stranger on the World Wide Web. Perhaps the word "web" describes well what can happen when you log on to the WRONG sites.
