SEEING AND BELIEVING

The phrase “sign of Jonah” was used by Jesus as a typological metaphor for His future crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. Jesus answered with this expression when asked by the Pharisees for miraculous proof the He was indeed the Messiah. The Pharisees remained unconvinced of Jesus’ claims about Himself, despite His having just cured a demon-possessed man who was both blind and mute. Shortly after the Pharisees accused Jesus of driving out demons by the power of Satan, they said to Him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.” He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here” (Matthew 12:38–41).

Matthew 16 (AMP) 1. Now the Pharisees and Sadducees came up to Jesus, and they asked Him to show them a sign (spectacular miracle) from heaven [attesting His divine authority].
2 He replied to them, [a]When it is evening you say, It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,
3 And in the morning, It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and has a gloomy and threatening look. You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.
4 A wicked and morally unfaithful generation craves a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. Then He left them and went away.

John 20:24-29 (AMP)
But Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came.
So the other disciples kept telling him, We have seen the Lord! But he said to them, Unless I see in His hands the marks made by the nails and put my finger into the nail prints, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe [it].
Eight days later His disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, though they were behind closed doors, and stood among them and said, Peace to you!
Then He said to Thomas, Reach out your finger here, and see My hands; and put out your hand and place [it] in My side. Do not be faithless and incredulous, but [stop your unbelief and] believe!
Thomas answered Him, My Lord and my God!
Jesus said to him, Because you have seen Me, Thomas, do you now believe (trust, have faith)? Blessed and happy and [a]to be envied are those who have never seen Me and yet have believed and adhered to and trusted and relied on Me

1 Peter 1:7-9 so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.

1. Restitution

The Meaning Of Restitution in the Bible is an act of restoring to the rightful owner something that has been taken away, stolen, lost, or surrendered...

In Ancient Biblical Times When someone took or stole something that was not his/hers, full restitution of the property had to be made and an added 20 percent (one-fifth of its value) had to be paid as compensation.

1 Samuel 30: 1~6 Now it happened, when David and his men came to Ziklag, on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the South and Ziklag, attacked Ziklag and burned it with fire, and had taken captive the women and those who were there, from small to great; they did not kill anyone, but carried them away and went their way. So David and his men came to the city, and there it was, burned with fire; and their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive. Then David and the people who were with him lifted up their voices and wept, until they had no more power to weep. And David’s two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite, had been taken captive. Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.

A) So David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?”

B) And He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.”
The relationship with David and his LORD are not even comparable with any other in the Bible except for Jesus. David knows that the LORD has the answer to what he should do. The LORD spoke to the people through the ephod of the priest. David had placed his will into the hands of the LORD, by consulting Him before acting. The LORD tells David to take the men and pursue the enemy. He reassures David, that all will be saved. There will be no loss to David and his men. The only loss will be to the Amalekites.

1Samuel 30: 18-20 So David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away, and David rescued his two wives. And nothing of theirs was lacking, either small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything which they had taken from them; David recovered all. Then David took all the flocks and herds they had driven before those other livestock, and said, “This is David’s spoil.”

Two hundred of King David’s men was so weary, they couldn’t cross over the Brook Besor to fight alongside David and the rest of his men, so they were left behind, after defeating the Amalekites, David and his four hundred men came back to the Brook Besor where the two hundred men greeted them. God is so merciful and gracious even though these men didn’t go fight with the rest of the men, God still blessed every one of them…

1Samuel 30: 22~24 Then all the wicked and worthless men of those who went with David answered and said, “Because they did not go with us, we will not give them any of the spoil that we have recovered, except for every man’s wife and children, that they may lead them away and depart.”
But David said, “My brethren, you shall not do so with what the Lord has given us, who has preserved us and delivered into our hand the troop that came against us. For who will heed you in this matter? But as his part is who goes down to the battle, so shall his part be who stays by the supplies; they shall share alike. Selah…

Luke 19:10 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount."

2. Retribution

Romans 12:19 - Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but [rather] give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance [is] mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

2 Thessalonians 1:6~8 For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.…

I Declare full restitution and vengeance is the Lord's'; He shall repay...

1 Peter 5:7~11 Casting the [c]whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, [d]once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you [e]watchfully. Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour.

Withstand him; be firm in faith [against his onset—rooted, established, strong, immovable, and determined], knowing that the same (identical) sufferings are appointed to your brotherhood (the whole body of Christians) throughout the world.
And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace [Who imparts all blessing and favor], Who has called you to His [own] eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will Himself complete and make you what you ought to be, establish and ground you securely, and strengthen, and settle you.
To Him be the dominion (power, authority, rule) forever and ever. Amen (so be it).

A Word For Your Every Day Life "PRAISE" It Repeals The Enemy Of Your Soul here's some synonyms for repeal: revoke, rescind, repudiate, overturn, annul; disallow, cancel, invalidate, nullify, void, negate, dissolve, countermand, declare null and void, discontinue; reverse, retract, remove, withdraw, abolish, put an end to, do away with, get rid of, end, stop, quash, scrap; dis-affirm...

2 Chronicles 20:22 when Jehoshaphat and all Judah began to sing and praise, the LORD set ambushes against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.

Psalm 44: 4~6 You are my King, O God; Command victories for Jacob. Through You we will push back our adversaries; { For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places}  Through Your name we will trample down those who rise up against us. For I will not trust in my bow, Nor will my sword save me, but You Lord are my battle ax and weapons of war...

Psalm 108:13 Explained. God's help shall inspire us to help ourselves. Faith is neither a coward nor a sluggard: she knows that God is with her, and therefore she does valiantly; she knows that he will tread down her enemies, and therefore she arises to tread them down in his name. Where praise and prayer have preceded the battle, we may expect to see heroic deeds and decisive victories. Through God is our secret support; from that source we draw all our courage, wisdom, and strength. We shall do valiantly. This is the public outflow from that secret source: our inward and spiritual faith proves itself by outward and valorous deeds. He shall tread down our enemies. They shall fall before him, and as they lie prostrate he shall march over them, and all the hosts of his people with him. This is a prophecy. It was fulfilled to David, but it remains true to the Son of David and all who are on his side. The Church shall yet arouse herself to praise her God with all her heart, and then with songs and hosannas she will advance to the great battle; her foes shall be overthrown and utterly crushed by the power of her God, and the Lord's glory shall be above all the earth. Send it in our time, we beseech thee, O Lord.

Psalm 116 I love the Lord, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications.
2 Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live...
Thou art my God, and I will praise thee: thou art my God, I will exalt thee.
O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth forever.

Psalm 138:5~7 And they will sing of the ways of the LORD, For great is the glory of the LORD. For though the LORD is exalted, Yet He regards the lowly, {God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things-and the things that are not-to nullify the things that are}But the haughty He knows from afar. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me; You will stretch forth Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, And Your right hand will save me.…

Psalm 113: Praise the LORD! Praise, O servants of the LORD, praise the name of the LORD! Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and forevermore! From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the LORD is to be praised! The LORD is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens! Who is like the LORD our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the heavens and the earth? He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people. He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children. Praise the LORD!

In Proverbs 9:1 Wisdom Hath Builded Her House, She Hath Hewn Out Her Seven Pillars. The Same Wisdom That Spoke In Chapter 8 Speaks In This Chapter. There She Was Represented As Manifest In All The Works Of God In The Material Worlds. Here She Is Represented As The Ruler Of What She Has Built; She Is Seen Building A House, Making A Banquet, And Sending Out Her Maids To Invite Guests To Partake Of Her Bounties. She Is Pictured Here As A Builder, Sculptress, Butcher And Gracious Hostess. Wisdom Is Personified Here In Chapter Eight and Nine As Well a). Searches b) Hates c) Counsels d) Advises e) Builds etc…

Proverbs 8:
1) Prudence: I Wisdom Dwell With Prudence, And Find Out Knowledge Of Witty Inventions (Verse 12). Prudence Here Is Defined As Practical Wisdom Or Wisdom In Action, Choosing The Best Means To An End. Hence, Witty (Shrewd, Practical) Inventions. Whoever Is Wise, Let Him Understand These Things; Whoever Is Discerning, Let Him Know Them. For The Ways Of The Lord Are Right, And The Righteous Will Walk In Them, But Transgressors Will Stumble In Them (Hosea 14:9).
2) Knowledge & Discernment: The Prudent See Danger And Take Refuge, But The Simple Keep Going And Pay The Penalty. The Reward Of Humility And The Fear Of The Lord Are Riches, Honor And Life. (Prov 22:3, 4).
3) The Fear Of God: The Fear Of The Lord Is To Hate Evil, Pride, And Arrogance, And The Evil Way, And The Forward Mouth, Do I Hate. (Verse 13). Wisdom Hates What God Hates. The Highest Virtue Is Humility (Submission To God), And Thus Wisdom Hates Pride And Self-Exaltation Above All.
4) Counsel: Counsel Is Mine (Verse14). Listen To Counsel And Accept Discipline, That You May Be Wise The Rest Of Your Days. Many Plans Are In A Man's Heart, But The Counsel Of The Lord Will Stand. (Prov 19: 20, 21).The Spirit Of The Lord Shall Rest Upon Him, The Spirit Of Wisdom And Understanding, The Spirit Of Counsel And Might, The Spirit Of Knowledge And Of The Fear Of The Lord;" We Should Seek This Spirit Of The Lord To Have These Things (Isa 11: 2).
5) Sound Wisdom: By His Knowledge The Deeps Were Broken Up And The Skies Drip With Dew. My Son, Let Them Not Vanish From Your Sight; Keep Sound Wisdom And Discretion, So They Will Be Life To Your Soul And Adornment To Your Neck. (Prov 3: 20-22). This Is To My Father's Glory, That You Bear Much Fruit, Showing Yourselves To Be My Disciples (John15:8). “Righteousness, Justice And Equity”. These Are The Ways That We Can Be Wise In Our Daily Behavior. These Are The Great Prophetic Themes. The Emphasis Here Is On Action Rather Than On Casual Armchair Religion.
6) Understanding: I Am Understanding. Wisdom [Is] The Principal Thing; [Therefore] Get Wisdom: And With All Thy Getting Get Understanding (Prov 4: 7). Buy The Truth And Do Not Sell It-- Wisdom, Instruction And Insight As Well. (Prov 23:23).
7) Power: It Is Good That You Grasp One Thing And Also Not Let Go Of The Other; For The One Who Fears God Comes Forth With Both Of Them. Wisdom Strengthens A Wise Man More Than Ten Rulers Who Are In A City. Indeed, There Is Not A Righteous Man On Earth Who Continually Does Good And Who Never Sins (Ecclesiastes 7: 18-20). A Wise Man Is Strong; Yes, A Man Of Knowledge Increases Strength (Prov 24:5). Wisdom From God Helps Us In All Circumstances. Wisdom, (Advice From God) Would Be Especially Useful In War. When The Israelites Fought Their Wars, They Won When The Lord Led Them In Battle; But When They Fought The Battles In Their Own Strength Without His Help, They Failed And Lost Many Lives. God Must Guide Us In Everything Or We, Too, Will Fail.

God's goodness is expressed in creation and experienced in salvation. The psalmist proclaims the goodness of God as great and as eternal. God is the true essence of goodness, the Author of unlimited, undeserved generosity.
Though God alone is truly good. Scripture encourages believers to seek goodness by modeling their lives after Christ Jesus. For the Christian, goodness is not simply the absence of evil; it is righteousness accompanied by acts of kindness. As a fruit of the Holy Spirit, goodness is a natural result of love, joy, peace, long-suffering, and kindness at work in a persons life, it is the outward expression of inward change in a believer's heart-the invisible power of a Holy God overcoming the sinful nature that is in all people.
True goodness is difficult to attain. It manifests itself only in a life totally committed to the Lord and is a requirement for effective ministry. Service to others is counted as evidence of the goodness of God at work in the life of a believer...

Programs, Programs & More Programs

I am just thinking out loud that's all...

No disrespect intended to the Church, but how many programs, clubs, and curriculums are we going to come up with before we put into practice what we've already learned for decades! In some cases or most, we’re consuming a wealth of knowledge and that’s a good thing, the bad part about that is you've become engrossed in going from program to club to classes and never live out or give out what you’ve been given from the Lord…

In Matthew 10:8 the Lord says, in the later part of this vers freely you have received, freely give… your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk you in it, when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, Walk it out Says the Lord.

Psalm 25:9
He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.
The Lord is Your Blueprint method for accomplishing your God given purpose; He’ll give you strategy, knowledge, design, and a mission to carry out His will for your life and the church.

This is what the LORD says-- your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: "I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.

Please don’t miss understand my statement, We are aware that in some cases it does take time planning out and implementing certain program’s before releasing a person or people into serving or ministry…

The Lord said, he will lead the blind and turn their darkness into light make their rough places smooth and teach you what is best… These are all action words; the Lord is not going to have his people going from program, to program, and to hub meetings for five, ten, or even fifteen years of healings and teachings and never utilize what tools you’ve been given. You’ll go outside the church and give it away to another country or body of believers which is a good thing done in its proper perspective. Some of the church’s own immediate members’ households are broken up; they've chased after programs for so long and given their last in offerings and served in the church almost a lifetime, while their own families are excluded, Disregarded, and passed up by their own local Church. You have what it takes to change, your family, your ministry, your city, & your nation…

Hebrews 13:21

Joel 2 Explained - The Day of the Lord and the Restoration of the Lord

A. A mighty army to invade Judah.

1. (1-5) What the mighty army looks like.

Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in My holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble; for the day of the LORD is coming, for it is at hand: A day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, like the morning clouds spread over the mountains. A people come, great and strong, the like of whom has never been; nor will there ever be any such after them, even for many successive generations. A fire devours before them, and behind them a flame burns; the land is like the Garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; surely nothing shall escape them. Their appearance is like the appearance of horses; and like swift steeds, so they run. With a noise like chariots over mountaintops they leap, like the noise of a flaming fire that devours the stubble, like a strong people set in battle array.

a. Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble; for the day of the LORD is coming, for it is at hand: In Joel 1, the prophet spoke of the judgment that had arrived in Judah (a plague of locusts and drought). In Joel 2, he begins by describing judgment that will come - a mighty army set against Judah. Since this is all part of “God’s day” not “man’s day,” it is described as the day of the LORD.

i. When we are right with God, we want the day of the LORD. We long for Him to show His strength because we know that we abide in Him. When we are not right with God, we dread the day of the LORD, because when God shows Himself strong, His strength may work against us. In Joel’s day Judah was not right with God, so the day of the LORD would be nothing but darkness and gloominess to them.

b. A people come, great and strong: It’s hard to know what invasion Joel predicts. Probably Joel predicted an invasion that never happened because Judah responded to the invitation to repent and God held back this army. The 40-year godly reign of King Joash in Judah began right after the time of Joel’s prophecy.

i. There are some commentators who believe that Joel is referring back to the army of locusts, and describing them poetically. This is possible, but it seems best on balance to say that he writes of a literal human army that will come against an unrepentant Judah.

c. A fire devours before them, and behind them a flame burns: The urgent nature of this prophecy probably spurred Jehoiada to depose the wicked Queen Athaliah and set Joash on the throne, even though he was only seven years-old (2 Kings 11:4-21). Perhaps he would have waited until Joash was older, but Joel’s prophecy showed him that it had to be done immediately.

2. (6-11) What the mighty army will do.

Before them the people writhe in pain; all faces are drained of color. They run like mighty men, they climb the wall like men of war; every one marches in formation, and they do not break ranks. They do not push one another; every one marches in his own column. Though they lunge between the weapons, they are not cut down. They run to and fro in the city, they run on the wall; they climb into the houses, they enter at the windows like a thief. The earth quakes before them, the heavens tremble; the sun and moon grow dark, and the stars diminish their brightness. The LORD gives voice before His army, for His camp is very great; for strong is the One who executes His word. For the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; who can endure it?

a. They do not break ranks . . . everyone marches in his own column: With a chilling poetic flair, Joel describes the discipline and effectiveness of this army. Because they keep ranks and work with energy (they run to and fro in the city) they bring a devastating attack on Judah.

i. If we consider the people of God to be like an army - perhaps based on the military images Paul sprinkled through his letters - then this passage shows us two things that can make God’s people more effective. First they must keep order, with every soldier keeping ranks. Second they must work hard, with every soldier serving with energy.

b. The LORD gives voice before His army: As impressive as this army is, Joel does not want Judah to forget that it’s real power lies in that God has sent them. They will be His tool of judgment against Judah - unless they repent.

i. When the plague of locusts and the drought devastated Judah, you might have thought that Joel would encourage the people. He might have said, “Hang in there! Things are bad, but they will get better. Tough times don’t last, but tough people do.” Instead Joel said, “You think that was bad? Worse is to come if we don’t repent.”

B. A promise of help to a repentant Judah.

1. (12-17) The prophet calls God’s people to repent.

“Now, therefore,” says the LORD, “Turn to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.” So rend your heart, and not your garments; return to the LORD your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness; and He relents from doing harm. Who knows if He will turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind Him; a grain offering and a drink offering for the LORD your God? Blow the trumpet in Zion, consecrate a fast, call a sacred assembly; gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children and nursing babes; let the bridegroom go out from his chamber, and the bride from her dressing room. Let the priests, who minister to the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar; let them say, “Spare Your people, O LORD, and do not give Your heritage to reproach, that the nations should rule over them. Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’“

a. Now, therefore . . . Turn to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning: Because they heard the warning of judgment, God’s people should repent. It’s doesn’t make their repentance less valid because they had to be “scared” into it. The important thing is that they turn back to the LORD in sincerity, and God tells them how.

i. Sincere repentance is to turn to God, and therefore away from our sin.

ii. Sincere repentance is done with all your heart, giving everything you can in surrender to God.

iii. Sincere repentance is marked by action (with fasting) and emotion (with weeping . . . mourning). Not every act of repentance will include fasting and weeping, but if action and emotion are absent, it isn’t real repentance.

b. Rend your heart, and not your garments: One expression of mourning in Jewish culture is tearing the clothes. It was a way to say, “I am so overcome with grief that don’t care if my clothes are ruined and I look bad.” Joel knew that one could tear their garments without tearing their heart, and he describes the kind of heart-repentance that really pleases God.

i. Spurgeon tells the story of a woman who came seeming to be in great sorrow, saying what a great sinner she was, but Spurgeon suspected her repentance wasn’t sincere. He said, “Well, if you are a sinner of course you have broken God’s laws. Let’s read the Ten Commandments and see which ones you have broken.” They started at the first: “You shall have no other gods before Me,” and Spurgeon asked her if she ever broke that commandment. “Oh no,” she said, “not that I know of.” “‘You shall not make any graven image’ - did you ever break that one?” “Never, sir,” she answered. As you might suppose, Spurgeon went through all Ten Commandments and she could not find a single one that she had broken, and what he suspected was true. She didn’t really consider herself a sinner, and she was making a show of repentance because she thought it was expected of her.

c. Return to the LORD your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness; and He relents from doing harm: Knowing the goodness and mercy of God is another motive for true repentance. We come to Him confident that He will heal and forgive, and that He may relent from the judgment He announced.

i. We don’t repent with the idea “God is so mean that if I don’t return to Him, He will squash me.” Instead the idea is “God is so gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness that He will spare me from what I deserve if turn back to Him.” Ultimately, it is His goodness that leads us to repentance (Romans 2:4).

d. Let the bridegroom go out from his chamber, and the bride from her dressing room: In addition to the same pattern of repentance he presented in Joel 1:14, Joel adds the ideas relevant to the bridegroom and the bride. The idea with these images is that in a time of repentance God’s people cannot carry on “as usual.” Usually thebridegroom belongs in his chamber and the bride belongs in her dressing room, but not now - it is time to repent. True repentance does not carry on with business as usual.

e. Let the priests, who minister to the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar: Leaders among God’s people must especially lead in repentance. They can’t come with the attitude that “the people” must repent. They must regard themselves as the people and the people as themselves and lead in repentance.

f. Spare Your people, O LORD, and do not give Your heritage to reproach: Joel puts a rich prayer of repentance into the mouths of God’s priests. It as if the priests should pray with the thought, “How can we persuade God to have mercy on us?”

i. Spare: This implies that God’s people deserve judgment, but they plead for mercy.

ii. Your people: This reminds God that they belong to Him, and provides another motivation for mercy.

iii. Do not give Your heritage to reproach: This tells God that mercy unto His people will bring Him glory among the nations and that judgment may bring His name into discredit.

2. (18-20) God promises to defend His repentant people against the mighty army.

Then the LORD will be zealous for His land, and pity His people. The LORD will answer and say to His people, “Behold, I will send you grain and new wine and oil, and you will be satisfied by them; I will no longer make you a reproach among the nations. But I will remove far from you the northern army, and will drive him away into a barren and desolate land, with his face toward the eastern sea and his back toward the western sea; his stench will come up, and his foul odor will rise, because he has done monstrous things.”

a. Then the LORD will be zealous for His land, and pity His people: Judah could know that when God’s people sincerely repent, He notices from heaven. His zeal and pity are then turned for His people.

b. I will send you grain and new wine and oil . . . I will remove far from you the northern army: God promised to restore material prosperity to a repentant Judah, and to defeat the mighty army from the north. Because this mighty army had done monstrous things, God would turn the attention of His judgment away from His people and now against this mighty army.

3. (21-27) Confidence in God’s promise of restoration.

Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice, for the LORD has done marvelous things! Do not be afraid, you beasts of the field; for the open pastures are springing up, and the tree bears its fruit; the fig tree and the vine yield their strength. Be glad then, you children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God; for He has given you the former rain faithfully, and He will cause the rain to come down for you; the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month. The threshing floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil. “So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the crawling locust, the consuming locust, and the chewing locust, My great army which I sent among you. You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, who has dealt wondrously with you; and My people shall never be put to shame. Then you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel: I am the LORD your God and there is no other. My people shall never be put to shame.”

a. Be glad and rejoice, for the LORD has done marvelous things! Joel looks forward to the restoration that God has promised, and he tells Judah to look forward in faith, and to praise God for the restoration He promises - even before they see it with their own eyes.

b. The open pastures are springing up, and the tree bears its fruit: With the eye of faith, Joel can already see it happening. All around him are the lush, fruitful pastures and trees that God has restored after the destruction of the locusts.

c. He has given you the former rain faithfully . . . and the latter rain in the first month: At the end of Joel 1, the prophet saw the destruction drought brought. Now with the eye of faith he sees God restoring both the former and latter rain to Israel.

i. Ancient Israel had no irrigation system, and relied on rain to water their crops. In a time of drought, nothing grew. God promises to restore both the former rain (falling in autumn) and the latter rain (falling in spring). When God restores these rains, Judah will have full threshing floors and wine vats.

· The “five-fold ministry” and “restoration of apostle and prophets”
· The “foundational truths” of Hebrews 6:1-2
· An emphasis on signs and wonders as marks of true revival

iii. Many researchers - and many within these modern groups today - believe that many modern “revival” movements are really just a continuation of the Latter Rain movement. Movements such as “Joel’s Army,” the Manifest Sons of God, the Dominion Movement, the Kansas City Prophets, the Toronto Blessing, the Pensacola Revival are connected in some way to the Latter Rain movement. For example, Paul Cain - later to re-emerge as head of the Kansas City Prophets in 1989 - traveled with William Branham and called him “the greatest prophet that ever lived.”

d. I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten: God promises to restore what was taken away in chastisement. When the locusts did their work, it looked complete and final, but God promises that He can even restore the years that the swarming locusts has eaten.

i. “It will strike you at once that the locusts did not eat the years: the locusts ate the fruits of the years’ labor, the harvests of the fields; so that the meaning of the restoration of the years must be the restoration of those fruits and of those harvests which the locusts consumed. You cannot have back your time; but there is a strange and wonderful way in which God can give back to you the wasted blessings, the unripened fruits of years over which you mourned. The fruits of wasted years may yet be yours.” (Spurgeon)

4. (28-32) The ultimate restoration and the ultimate day of the LORD.

“And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: blood and fire and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD. And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance, as the LORD has said, among the remnant whom the LORD calls.”

a. It shall come to pass afterward: After the restoration Joel spoke of previously in the chapter, there will come a time of ultimate restoration and blessing. This latter time will be marked by an outpouring of God’s Spirit on all flesh - not only selected men at selected times for selected duties.

i. The Old Testament has a rich record of the work of the Spirit, but He was not poured out on all flesh under the Old Covenant. Instead, certain men were filled with the Spirit at certain times and only for certain duties. It was rather selective:

· Joseph was filled with the Spirit of God (Genesis 41:38)
· The craftsmen who built the tabernacle were filled with the Spirit of God (Exodus 31:3)
· Joshua was filled with the Spirit of God (Numbers 27:18)
· The judge Othniel was filled with the Spirit of God (Judges 3:10)
· The judge Gideon was filled with the Spirit of God (Judges 6:34)
· The judge Jephthah was filled with the Spirit of God (Judges 11:29)
· The judge Samson was filled with the Spirit of God (Judges 13:5, 14:6, 14:19, 15:14)
· Saul was filled with the Spirit of God (1 Samuel 10:9-10)
· David was filled with the Spirit of God (1 Samuel 16:13)

ii. Here, Joel looks forward to the glorious New Covenant, when the Spirit of God would be poured out on all flesh. Why, even your sons and daughters, your old men, and your young men would be filled with the Spirit of God.

iii. This was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost when the disciples gathered in the upper room, waiting in Jerusalem for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit that Jesus promised would come (Acts 1:4-5). When the outpouring of the Spirit came, the 120 followers of Jesus were all filled with the Spirit and began to praise God in other tongues. Jerusalem was crowded at that time, because of the feast of Pentecost - so a crowd quickly gathered because of the commotion. Those who heard the disciples praise God in these miraculous languages began to mock them, claiming they were drunk. Peter stood up and boldly set the record straight: the disciples were not drunk at all, but this was a fulfillment of Joel’s great prophecy of the outpouring of the Spirit.

Peter’s sermon of the Day of Pentecost also shows us that there is never any disparity between the work of the Spirit and the work of the Word. When Peter was filled with the Spirit of God in the midst of miraculous signs and wonders as he had never experience before, what did he do? He said, “Let’s open up our Bibles to the book of Joel.” He had a Bible study, one that both taught the 120 disciples (they better understood their experience according to the Scriptures) and called the lost to salvation.

We also notice that Peter’s application was exactly the same as the application made by the Prophet Joel: repent. Joel said, “Now, therefore,” says the LORD, “Turn to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.” So rend your heart, and not your garments; return to the LORD your God (Joel 2:12-13) Peter said, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38)

b. And also on My menservants and on My maidservants: In this latter time, all the servants of the LORD will be filled with His Spirit in this unique and powerful way. Under the New Covenant, every believer can receive the full measure of the Spirit, and be used in a special and wonderful way.

c. I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: This time of great outpouring of the Spirit of God will culminate with cataclysmic signs in the heavens and the great and awesome day of the LORD.

On the Day of Pentecost, the prophecy of Joel was fulfilled, but not consummated. Peter rightly saw that this was a remarkable outpouring of the Spirit of God, given freely upon all who believe and receive as was promised in the New Covenant (Ezekiel 11:19, 36:24-28). The prophecy of Joel was also especially appropriate, because the Day of Pentecost ushered in the last days - with history now moving along the edge of the consummation of all things, not rushing towards it as a distant point.

d. Whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved: This is another glorious promise associated with the time Joel said shall come to pass afterward. In this time of the poured-out Spirit of God, salvation will no longer be a matter of association with national Israel. Instead, whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved - no matter what nation they come from

Blood Is The Highest Of Acceptable Sacrifice Because In It Is The Spirit Of Life.
1.} Leviticus 17:11 For The Life Of The Flesh Is In The Blood: And I Have Given It To You On The Altar To Make An Atonement For Your Souls: For It Is The Blood That Makes An Atonement For The Soul.

2.} Hebrews 9:22 In Fact, The Law Requires That Nearly Everything Be Cleansed With Blood, And Without The Shedding Of Blood There Is No Forgiveness.

James 2:26 For As The Body Without The Spirit Is Dead, So Faith Without Works Is Dead Also. {We are three part being, we are spiritual beings,we live in this body and we have a soul}...

John 19:30 (NASB95) Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
Jesus Christ the most excellent sacrifice. His Blood was sinless and so spiritually and naturally uncontaminated; His divine conception saw to that.

This portion of study comes from the prophet’s Dictionary Paula A. Price & Forwarded By: Dr. Bill Hamon. The only visible element of the human being that transcends time and space is the blood. It is the single feature that communicates to every other part of the body.
When Cain Slaughtered Abel, The Lord said that Abel’s blood still spoke to him from the earth in the realms of the spirit. Blood has both voice and intelligence, God knew Abel was dead because The Spiritual Life Contained in Abel’s Blood continued to cry out from the ground to God, Although Abel’s physical body was dead Genesis 4:8-10.The blood somehow is a living memory system.

Side~Note: Revelation 6:9-11 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been.
Blood being the life agency of all flesh means that it is the only currency that occupies time, space, and eternity at once. Christ Blood transcends time and space to reach back to heaven the place where Lucifer’s transgression and to edon to remit it transgressions being eternally human and divine, Jesus Christ blood remains effective to the end of the age. Jesus Christ is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for [the sins of] the whole world.

1 Peter 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

Gideon's Valley Experience.

Gideon is the fifth major judge of Israel. Gideon was given the task of delivering the Israelites from the Midianites and Amalekites, desert nomads who repeatedly raided the country.

The angel of the LORD came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. {12} When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, "The LORD is with you, mighty warrior." {13} "But sir," Gideon replied, "if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our fathers told us about when they said, 'Did not the LORD bring us up out of Egypt?' But now the LORD has abandoned us and put us into the hand of Midian." {14} The LORD turned to him and said, "Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian's hand. Am I not sending you?" {15} "But Lord, " Gideon asked, "how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family." {16} The LORD answered, "I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites together."

Gideon was in a valley experience when the Lord first approached him. He was that way because he concentrated on the circumstances he was in. In his circumstances, he could not see any of the miracles his ancestors experienced. We too can look at the current state of our live and feel depressed.

Gideon also had a low image of himself. He described himself as being the least of the least, a complete good-for-nothing. He could not believe that someone would actually describe him as a mighty warrior.

According to the Lord, Gideon was not in a valley at all. He was a mighty warrior and God was with him. With that, the Lord promised that he would lead his people into victory against the Midianites.

When we feel like we are in the valley, do not concentrate on our external circumstances. Concentrate on how the Lord would have viewed the situation. Did God promise that you would come out victorious? What did God promise that you could do?

(Phil 4:13 NIV) I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

In his valley experience, Gideon asked God for a sign that would encourage him. The first sign God gave him was to consume the food that Gideon brought to him. When we are in a low point, we can ask God for assurances that He is with us. God did not get angry with Gideon for doing so. God knows that we need some visible confirmation in moments of doubt. Sometimes the confirmation may come from someone who is praying for you, who receives a word from the Lord for you.

(Judg 6:17-22 NIV) Gideon replied, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, give me a sign that it is really you talking to me. {18} Please do not go away until I come back and bring my offering and set it before you." And the LORD said, "I will wait until you return." {19} Gideon went in, prepared a young goat, and from an ephah of flour he made bread without yeast. Putting the meat in a basket and its broth in a pot, he brought them out and offered them to him under the oak. {20} The angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and the unleavened bread, place them on this rock, and pour out the broth." And Gideon did so. {21} With the tip of the staff that was in his hand, the angel of the LORD touched the meat and the unleavened bread. Fire flared from the rock, consuming the meat and the bread. And the angel of the LORD disappeared. {22} When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the LORD, he exclaimed, "Ah, Sovereign LORD! I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face!"

The next thing the Lord did to Gideon was to test him. Our valley experiences may be times of testing by God. The example of Job is a good one. Here God tested Gideon to see whether he would obey Him. The tearing down of Baal’s altar carries great risk, even death but Gideon obeyed.

(Judg 6:23-30 NIV) But the LORD said to him, "Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die." {24} So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there and called it The LORD is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. {25} That same night the LORD said to him, "Take the second bull from your father's herd, the one seven years old. Tear down your father's altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah pole beside it. {26} Then build a proper kind of altar to the LORD your God on the top of this height. Using the wood of the Asherah pole that you cut down, offer the second bull as a burnt offering." {27} So Gideon took ten of his servants and did as the LORD told him. But because he was afraid of his family and the men of the town, he did it at night rather than in the daytime. {28} In the morning when the men of the town got up, there was Baal's altar, demolished, with the Asherah pole beside it cut down and the second bull sacrificed on the newly built altar! {29} They asked each other, "Who did this?" When they carefully investigated, they were told, "Gideon son of Joash did it." {30} The men of the town demanded of Joash, "Bring out your son. He must die, because he has broken down Baal's altar and cut down the Asherah pole beside it."

Gideon could have reasoned, “I am already in the low point of my life. Why must I do something that may cause me to go even lower.” But he did not consider that. We could be in a low point of our career and wonder why we should obey God and practice integrity since it seems to be bringing us further losses. In these situations, God may be testing you to see if you would obey Him no matter what.

When Gideon was in the valley experience, he thought that he was the least in the whole tribe. Why on earth would people follow him? Yet God declared him to be a mighty warrior that would lead the people. It is not about Gideon’s ability but about what the Spirit of God can do in a person. When the moment arrives for Gideon to lead, all the people responded because God was with him.

(Judg 6:33-35 NIV) Now all the Midianites, Amalekites and other eastern peoples joined forces and crossed over the Jordan and camped in the Valley of Jezreel. {34} Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet, summoning the Abiezrites to follow him. {35} He sent messengers throughout Manasseh, calling them to arms, and also into Asher, Zebulun and Naphtali, so that they too went up to meet them.

Your valley experience is for God to bring glory to His name. When you are stripped of everything and God turns around your situation through the exercise of His power, all those observing it will know that it is God who has done a miracle in the situation.

The Lord would not allow Gideon to fight the Midianites with 32,000 men. He would only allow 300 to fight so that all glory would go to Him. When you are in the valley, your situation may get worse and worse until such point when you feel totally helpless. You may be moving closer and closer to the point when you are totally helpless and relying on God’s strength alone to deliver you.

(Judg 7:1-8 NIV) Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod. The camp of Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh. {2} The LORD said to Gideon, "You have too many men for me to deliver Midian into their hands. In order that Israel may not boast against me that her own strength has saved her, {3} announce now to the people, 'Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.'" So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained. {4} But the LORD said to Gideon, "There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will sift them for you there. If I say, 'This one shall go with you,' he shall go; but if I say, 'This one shall not go with you,' he shall not go." {5} So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the LORD told him, "Separate those who lap the water with their tongues like a dog from those who kneel down to drink." {6} Three hundred men lapped with their hands to their mouths. All the rest got down on their knees to drink. {7} The LORD said to Gideon, "With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the other men go, each to his own place." {8} So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites to their tents but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others. Now the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley.

While the Lord is making Gideon’s situation more desperate by removing his resources, he is making His promise even surer by continually providing confirmation. You may find that your situation is worsening but God’s promises are increasing. Which you choose to believe is the real test.

(Judg 7:9-15 NIV) During that night the LORD said to Gideon, "Get up, go down against the camp, because I am going to give it into your hands. {10} If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah {11} and listen to what they are saying. Afterward, you will be encouraged to attack the camp." So he and Purah his servant went down to the outposts of the camp. {12} The Midianites, the Amalekites and all the other eastern peoples had settled in the valley, thick as locusts. Their camels could no more be counted than the sand on the seashore. {13} Gideon arrived just as a man was telling a friend his dream. "I had a dream," he was saying. "A round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent with such force that the tent overturned and collapsed." {14} His friend responded, "This can be nothing other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite. God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands." {15} When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he worshiped God. He returned to the camp of Israel and called out, "Get up! The LORD has given the Midianite camp into your hands."

Even though it was God who delivered Israel out of its valley experience, it is not as though they did nothing. They did have to play a part in the deliverance although at the end of it, it would be clear that it was the Lord who had delivered them.

(Judg 8:4 NIV) Gideon and his three hundred men, exhausted yet keeping up the pursuit, came to the Jordan and crossed it

The Lord is always calling us to a higher place in himself, Draw nigh to God and he will draw nigh to you." If you are satisfied with where you are, you will never hear the call, "come up higher."

We have to leave the crowd. Notice in Mt. 17:1, Jesus took them "up into a high mountain apart." "Apart" means "Private," "Separate." Some people will never have a mountain top experience with God because they are unwilling to separate from those that keep them involved in sin and rebellion. Please read 2 Cor. 6:14-18.

We have to leave the cares that consume us behind. In verse 4, Peter said "it is good for us to be here." Having a mountain top experience with God will require us to leave our cares behind. The things that consume our time and thoughts and take us from a deep, personal, peaceful and joyful Christian life will have to be cast upon the Lord. Please see Ps. 55:22, "Cast thy burden upon the LORD and he shall sustain thee." It is impossible to have a mountain top experience when your life is filled with cares of all sorts. Give them to God!

We have to lighten our collection of things. Mountain climbing requires we carry only the bare essentials. See Heb. 12:1-2 where we are to "lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us." There are some things in life that will keep a true believer from a mountain top experience. We cannot go up to higher ground with God with things like drugs, alcohol, immorality, tobacco products, ungodly music, ungodly dress styles and any other thing that offends the holiness of God.

We have to give God complete control of our lives

There are some conditions for having a mountain top experience with God: You must be saved; you must be cleansed from sin; you must yearn for fellowship with God and you must learn in order to be a servant of God.
There are some things that will keep us off the mountain with God: Unconverted; unconfessed sin; uncaring attitude, and an unconcern for the will of God. We cannot get closer to God on our terms. IF YOU ARE READY, HE IS READY!

Mountain-top experiences
Mountains often had a significant role in God’s dealings with His people. In the English language we have the expression “mountain-top experience”. This expression has originated from the Bible because of the dealings God had with His people on various “mountain-tops”. So the phrase has come to mean a moment of transcendence – or epiphany; and in particular an experience of significant revelation given by God.
It was on the Mountains of Ararat that Noah’s ark came to rest after the Flood (see Genesis 8:4). God made a covenant with Noah there.
On one of the mountains in the region of Moriah God asked Abraham to make a sacrifice of his only son Isaac and God provided the Ram as a substitute (see Genesis 22:2). Later Solomon would build the temple on Mount Moriah – the place where substitutionary sacrifices would be offered until Jesus came. See 2 Chronicles 3:1.
On Mount Sinai (also known as Mt. Horeb) God revealed His character to Moses and gave him the Ten Commandments (see Exodus 19:16-20:12).
On Mt. Carmel Elijah challenged the false prophets of Baal to a contest to see which God would answer by fire. Of course it was the Lord who demonstrated His power that day (see 1 Kings 18). And after the great contest when Elijah ran for his life he travelled to Mt. Horeb and God met with him there in the “still small voice” (KJV) or “gentle whisper” (NIV) see 1 Kings 19.
Jesus taught His disciples on the Mount of Olives (see Matthew 24:3) and He was transfigured on a mountain (see Mark 9:2). It shouldn't surprise us that Moses and Elijah (who both had their own mountain-top experiences) were seen talking with Jesus on that mountain.
And we must not forget Mount Zion – the place where King David built his city (later called Jerusalem). Where God is said to dwell (Isaiah 8:18). Mt Zion figuratively points forward to the new heaven and new earth where all true believers will one day be welcomed into God’s dwelling place forever. See Hebrews 12:22 and Revelation 14:1.
So Mountains are symbolic of God's revelation to man. God gives the “mountain-top experience” in order to sustain His people as they go down into the valley! His revelation is always intended to help us journey with Him more closely on the road ahead.
For Moses that journey was to lead God's people to the Promised Land. For Elijah it was to confront wickedness in the land and appoint the next prophet. For Jesus it was the journey to the cross and for us it is a journey from the cross to the New Jerusalem

Here we do a study of those people in the Bible who experienced “low points” in their lives not as a consequence of sin but as part of God’s plan for them to fulfill their destiny.

Abraham's Valley Experience.

God promised Abraham that He would make him a great nation with many descendants.

(Gen 12:1-2 NIV)  The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. {2} "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.

Despite this promise, Abraham remained at a low point in his life in terms of descendants. He had none! In the days of his time, a person’s honour was tied to the number of descendants that he has. To have no descendants meant great shame. It was a greater embarrassment because his God promised that Abraham would be a father of a great nation.

For a very long period after this promise, Abraham continued to be childless. But God would appear to Abraham time and again to reassure him that His promise still stands.

(Gen 15:1-5 NIV)  After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward." {2} But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?" {3} And Abram said, "You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir." {4} Then the word of the LORD came to him: "This man will not be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir." {5} He took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars--if indeed you can count them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."

Abraham was clearly disappointed that up to this point he still did not have any children. He brought up his disappointment to God and He understood. He did not scold Abraham for being disappointed. He understood that it was natural to be disappointed and reassured him once again.

Abraham believed God’s promise that he would have children. But being pressured by his wife, he agreed to have children through his maidservant Hagar. Perhaps his faith wavered at that point. Or perhaps he thought that God’s promise of descendants could also mean they come from someone other than his wife.

Sometimes when God promises us something and it is slow to come, we waver in our faith and we try to “help” God to fulfil His promise by doing the wrong thing. We let the ends justify the means. We rationalize that it should be all right since the end is what God had promised.

Abraham may have fallen into this mistake by agreeing to have a child through the maidservant. Sure, this was a well-practised custom in those days but it does not make it right. God’s original plan was to have one man and one woman form one flesh.

(Gen 16:1-4 NIV)  Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar; {2} so she said to Abram, "The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family through her." Abram agreed to what Sarai said. {3} So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian maidservant Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. {4} He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.

The Lord appeared to him again and this time God changed his name from Abram (which means “exalted father”) to Abraham (which means “father of many nations”). This would greatly compound the shame of a man who was to be addressed by everyone he meets as the father of many nations when he did not even have one son with his wife. Yet Abram obeyed and changed his name to Abraham.

(Gen 17:1-5 NIV)  When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, "I am God Almighty ; walk before me and be blameless. {2} I will confirm my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers." {3} Abram fell facedown, and God said to him, {4} "As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. {5} No longer will you be called Abram ; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.

There was another difficult thing that Abraham had to do in order to see the covenant fulfilled. He had to circumcise all the male in his household. Again it was probably an embarrassing thing to do for Abraham had to explain that God told him to do it. The God who had long promised many descendants but still have not yet delivered even one. Yet Abraham obeyed.

Clearly he passed the test of whether he would continue to obey God when God’s promises are slow in coming. It is one thing to obey God when we see immediately results. But only a person who truly fears God will obey Him no matter what. Abraham passed the test.

God reiterated His promise to Abraham again. This time God clarified the promise so that there would be no room for misinterpretation by Abraham. The son was to come from Sarah, not any maidservant.

(Gen 17:15-19 NIV)  God also said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. {16} I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her." {17} Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, "Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?" {18} And Abraham said to God, "If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!" {19} Then God said, "Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.

The Lord appeared to Abraham yet again and this time the promise got even more specific. Abraham and Sarah were to have the baby in one year’s time. To God, nothing is impossible. What He has promised He will bring to past. It does not matter how bleak your current situation is.

(Gen 18:10-14 NIV)  Then the LORD said, "I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son." Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. {11} Abraham and Sarah were already old and well advanced in years, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. {12} So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, "After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?" {13} Then the LORD said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, 'Will I really have a child, now that I am old?' {14} Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son."

The end of Abraham’s valley experience came one year later when Sarah gave birth to a son and named him Isaac.

(Gen 21:1-2 NIV)  Now the LORD was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what he had promised. {2} Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.

The verse above emphasized that Abraham received his promise at the time when God had intended. Not earlier. We need to trust that God has His timing in everything. We may not understand why He wants us to wait. It may be to train us to be patient or to mould our character but God is never late in fulfilling His promise
