Discernment and Detection

The presence and nature of evil spirits can be known by two principal methods:

1. Discernment: (I Corinth 12:7-10) lists discerning of spirits as one of the nine supernatural gifts of THE HOLY SPIRIT.

1 Corinthians 12:7-10 Names of God Bible (NOG)

The evidence of the Spirit’s presence is given to each person for the common good of everyone. The Spirit gives one person the ability to speak with wisdom. The same Spirit gives another person the ability to speak with knowledge. To another person the same Spirit gives courageous faith. To another person, the same Spirit gives the ability to heal. 10 Another can work miracles. Another can speak what God has revealed. Another can tell the difference between spirits. Another can speak in different kinds of languages. Another can interpret languages.

2. Detection: the second method of knowing the presence and nature of evil spirits. Detection is simply observing what spirits are doing to a person (Mark 7: 4-30).

Mark 7:4-30 Names of God Bible (NOG)

When they come from the marketplace, they don’t eat unless they have washed first. They have been taught to follow many other rules. For example, they must also wash their cups, jars, brass pots, and dinner tables.

The Pharisees and the experts in Moses’ Teachings asked Yeshua, “Why don’t your disciples follow the traditions taught by our ancestors? They are unclean because they don’t wash their hands before they eat!”

Yeshua told them, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites in Scripture:

‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
Their worship of me is pointless
because their teachings are rules made by humans.’

“You abandon the commandments of God to follow human traditions.” He added, “You have no trouble rejecting the commandments of God in order to keep your own traditions! 10 For example, Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’ and ‘Whoever curses father or mother must be put to death.’ 11 But you say, ‘If a person tells his father or mother that whatever he might have used to help them is corban (that is, an offering to God), 12 he no longer has to do anything for his father or mother.’ 13 Because of your traditions you have destroyed the authority of God’s word. And you do many other things like that.”

14 Then he called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, all of you, and try to understand! 15 Nothing that goes into a person from the outside can make him unclean. It’s what comes out of a person that makes him unclean. 16 Let the person who has ears listen!”[b]

17 When he had left the people and gone home, his disciples asked him about this illustration.

18 Yeshua said to them, “Don’t you understand? Don’t you know that whatever goes into a person from the outside can’t make him unclean? 19 It doesn’t go into his thoughts but into his stomach and then into a toilet.” (By saying this, Yeshua declared all foods acceptable.) 20 He continued, “It’s what comes out of a person that makes him unclean. 21 Evil thoughts, sexual sins, stealing, murder, 22 adultery, greed, wickedness, cheating, shameless lust, envy, cursing, arrogance, and foolishness come from within a person. 23 All these evils come from within and make a person unclean.”

The Faith of a Greek Woman

24 Yeshua left that place and went to the territory of Tyre. He didn’t want anyone to know that he was staying in a house there. However, it couldn’t be kept a secret.

25 A woman whose little daughter had an evil spirit heard about Yeshua. She went to him and bowed down. 26 The woman happened to be Greek, born in Phoenicia in Syria. She asked him to force the demon out of her daughter.

27 Yeshua said to her, “First, let the children eat all they want. It’s not right to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.”

28 She answered him, “Lord, even the dogs under the table eat some of the children’s scraps.”

29 Yeshua said to her, “Because you have said this, go! The demon has left your daughter.”

30 The woman went home and found the little child lying on her bed, and the demon was gone.

Common Symptoms

Some of the most common symptoms of indwelling demons are as follows:

1. Disturbances in the emotions which persist or recur(1 Sam 16: 14-16, King Saul)

1 Samuel 16:14-16 New International Version (NIV)

David in Saul’s Service

14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil[a] spirit from the Lord tormented him.

15 Saul’s attendants said to him, “See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. 16 Let our lord command his servants here to search for someone who can play the lyre. He will play when the evil spirit from God comes on you, and you will feel better.”

2. Disturbances in the mind or thought life(Rom 7)

3. Outbursts or uncontrolled use of the tongue(Prov 18:21)

4. Recurring unclean thoughts and acts regarding sex(1 Corinth 6: 12-20)

1 Corinthians 6:12-20 New International Version (NIV)

Sexual Immorality

12 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 By his power, God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also.15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in the body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”[a] 17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.[b]

18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

5. Addictions to nicotine, alcohol, drugs, medicines, caffeine, food, etc(1 Corinth 10:13)

1 Corinthians 10:13 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

13 For no temptation (no trial regarded as enticing to sin), [no matter how it comes or where it leads] has overtaken you and laid hold on you that is not common to man [that is, no temptation or trial has come to you that is beyond human resistance and that is not [a]adjusted and [b]adapted and belonging to human experience, and such as man can bear]. But God is faithful [to His Word and to His compassionate nature], and He [can be trusted] not to let you be tempted and tried and assayed beyond your ability and strength of resistance and power to endure, but with the temptation He will [always] also provide the way out (the means of escape to [c]a landing place), that you may be capable and strong and powerful to bear up under it patiently.

6. Many diseases and physical afflictions are due to spirits of infirmity (Luke 13:11).

Religious Error

Involvement to any degree in religious error can open the door for demons as follows:

1. False religions, e.g. Eastern religions, pagan religions, philosophies and mind sciences.

2. Christian Cults - all such cults may be classified as bloodless religions having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof (2 Tim. 3:5).

3. Occult and Spiritism - Any method of seeking supernatural knowledge, wisdom, guidance and power apart from GOD is forbidden (Deut. 18:9-22)

Deuteronomy 18:9-22 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

When you come into the land which the Lord your God gives you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of these nations.

10 There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or daughter pass through the fire, or who uses divination, or is a soothsayer, or an augur, or a sorcerer,

11 Or a charmer, or a medium, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

12 For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord, and it is because of these abominable practices that the Lord your God is driving them out before you.

13 You shall be blameless [and absolutely true] to the Lord your God.

14 For these nations whom you shall dispossess listen to soothsayers and diviners. But as for you, the Lord your God has not allowed you to do so.

15 The Lord your God will raise up for you [a]a prophet (Prophet) from the midst of your brethren like me [Moses]; to him, you shall listen.

16 This is what you desired [and asked] of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.

17 And the Lord said to me, They have well said all that they have spoken.

18 I will raise up for them a prophet (Prophet) from among their brethren like you and will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.

19 And whoever will not hearken to My words which he shall speak in My name, I Myself will require it of him.

20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.

21 And if you say in your [minds and] hearts, How shall we know which words the Lord has not spoken?

22 When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the word does not come to pass or prove true, that is a word which the Lord has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.

4. False Doctrine - a great increase of doctrinal errors will be promoted by deceiving and seducing spirits in the last days (I Tim. 4).

  • Discernment and Detection

At this time, we know that looking back, God has trained and taught, given examples of what He has placed down on the inside of us. We have experienced various demonic forces, spirits and discerning and investigate to find out more, and asking and praying and God teaching what we discern and detect.

7 The evidence of the Spirit’s presence is given to each person for the common good of everyone. 8 The Spirit gives one person the ability to speak with wisdom. The same Spirit gives another person the ability to speak with knowledge. 9 To another person the same Spirit gives courageous faith. To another person, the same Spirit gives the ability to heal. 10 Another can work miracles. Another can speak what God has revealed. Another can tell the difference between spirits. Another can speak in different kinds of languages. Another can interpret languages

    2. Detection: the second method of knowing the presence and nature of evil spirits. Detection is simply observing what spirits are doing to a person (Mark 7: 4-30). By observing how a person acts or reaction to something, give a sign of what they are operating in, rather it's good or not so good. This comes from knowing God, studying and fasting. We sense thing through our nostrils, we feel a pulling, a discomfort when some demonic activity is present. That comes the teaching a sensing God unction, discernment from God.

  • God bless every one, I found this teaching to be very informative. I am looking forward to next weeks course of study with you all... Agape

    1. Discernment: (I Corinth 12:7-10) lists discerning of spirits as one of the nine supernatural gifts of THE HOLY SPIRIT.

The same triune God works through a variety of people for the spiritual development of all, Whatever the gifts, they all are given by the same Spirit of God. God gives all gifts according to His will.

    1. Detection: the second method of knowing the presence and nature of evil spirits. Detection is simply observing what spirits are doing to a person (Mark 7: 4-30).

"Nothing outside a man can make him 'unclean'(Impure unsuited for certain holy activities) by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him 'unclean.'" (15) Later his disciples (students) tell him they didn't understand him and he scolds them for being "dull". He explains to them that food cannot make a person unclean but "What comes out of a man is what makes him 'unclean.' For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality (Immorality is the violation of moral laws), theft, murder, adultery, greed (The seven deadly sins known as capital vices or cardinal sins they are pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth), malice(Wickedness) , deceit, lewdness, envy (Envy is an emotion which "occurs when a person lacks another's superior quality, achievement, or possession and either desires it or wishes that the other lacked it"), slander (Defamation, calumny, vilification, or traducement is the communication of a false statement that, depending on the law of the country, harms the reputation of an individual, business, product, group, government, religion, or nation), arrogance (excessive pride or conceit that often brings about someone’s downfall), and folly. All these evils come from inside and make a man 'unclean.'" (20-23) meaning intention of the "heart" is more important than ritual. What foods you eat will not matter to God.

  • How to detect spirits and negative forces

When I was growing up I use to see strange things that demons were doing to people. At that time I didn't understand what was going on. Today I Discern and Detect as to what spirit I am dealing was.

    Great topic.

  • When we allow Holy Spirit to teach us to discern we gain wisdom and direction, which is a gift from God. With discernment we are able to dectect and turn from what is unclean and unrighteous.

  • Amen, we need spiritual discernment and detection.  We need to pay close attention, because the Bible has told us what thus says the Lord about why we need to use spiritual discernment and detection.  The Holy Bible gives us concrete evidence on how we can recognize these characteristics of demons, how to discern them, detect them and how we can show people this in order to free them.  Many believers do not know all of this is in the Bible, because they fail to actually open up the Bible and when they do, they fail to ask God for divine understanding.  This was a powerful teaching on today and as God's children, we must only speak what God tells us to speak and those receiving the prophecy should be able to tell if its from God by seeing if it lines up with God's Holy Word. Amen

  • Amen im glad i have been obident to only speak what i was told to and yes it all came to pass. I rather speak when God say so.

  • We have to be careful because the BIBLE speaks of false prophets and false teaching we need to know how to hear from the LORD AMEN.

  • This is why that we should pray that the holy spirit is active in our lives. So that we are able to discern and detect these evil sprits and what GOD TELLS us to do to expel THEM.

  • Spiritual authority is the unique possession of the Head, Christ (Matt. 28:18; Eph. 1:22-23). This authority is transmitted into and through the Body in its organic union in life with the Head. Human beings—whether apostles, prophets, elders, or deacons—have no spiritual authority in themselves. Men can only act as Christ's deputy authority to the degree that they are in the organic union with Christ in the mingled spirit and are rightly related to the Body. Furthermore, this delegated authority must be exercised within the constraints of the apostles' teaching. The teaching of the apostles is the unique leadership in the New Testament. The authority of the gifted ones is not exercised directly through their giving orders or controlling the actions of the saints and the churches; rather, it is exercised indirectly through the ministering of life by teaching according to God's New Testament economy. In fact, we do not follow persons as much as we follow the vision of God's New Testament economy.

Our Spiritual authority gives us the discernment we need to detect the presence of the enemy. We are able to sense the presence and the operation of the spiritual realm.
