DISTINGUISH BETWEEN PURPOSE AND METHOD

There are two predominant styles of leadership in the campus ministry today. The first concept is that of the team leader being the “high-scorer” on the team. He sees his role of team leader as the pace setter. He wants to lead by example. He gains his satisfaction by doing more evangelism, having more students in groups, and spending more hours on campus than anyone else on his team. He’s really more concerned with how he is doing rather than how his team is doing.

A second model for leadership is that of a player-coach. A player-coach is a player who coaches and a coach who plays. As a player he does what he can as a team member to score as many points as possible. As a coach he develops his players and organizes his team in such a way to have the maximum chance of winning. Good coaches develop the individual’s skills and competencies. They know that the teams with the best skills and comptencies usually win the most games. Football Coach A.A. Stagg said this, “No coach ever won a game based on what he knew, but on what his players knew and did.”

The amount of coaching in proportion to playing is determined by your natural leadership style, experience, years in ministry, size and maturity of your team and leadership, size of the movement, marital status, number and ages of children, expansion responsibilities, etc. The design of our job dictates that we can never be all-player or all-coach. My purpose remains constant but my leadership style (the method of leading) will evolve over the years.

For example, a first year team leader will most likely have to lead primarily as a player who does a little coaching. The team wants to see him in action. He won’t have the ethos to lead as a coach. However a director who has had ten years on the job can function more as a coach who plays. He doesn’t need to lead the team statistically in any category to be effective. The apostle Paul’s method as a leader changed though his purpose did not. The book of Acts is a chronicle of his days as a player. The pastoral epistles describe his ministry as a player-coach.

THEY DISCERN WITH WHOM TO INVEST TIME

Gordon McDonald has identified five types of people that we meet with:

VIPs (Very Important People)–These people are important because they are your proven leadership- -the staff and student leaders of your movement. It’s very easy to neglect these people because they often seem to be self-motivated and self-sufficient. They are not the ones screaming for your attention. These people, however, are those that you should give yourself to. What you do with these people is what they will do with the people God gives them. The principle is this: Invest the maximum amount of time with those who are assuming the maximum responsibility for the future of the movement.

VTPs (Very Teachable People)–These are your progressing leaders–the next generation of leadership, the leaders of your movement in the coming years.

VNPs (Very Nice People). These are the people who are good people… nice people but are just not going anywhere. If we had unlimited time and energy we could meet with everybody, but we don’t. We have to make choices for the good of everyone involved in your movement.

VDPs (Very Draining People). These are the people who often are demanding of your time. Meeting with you, the team leader gives them a sense of importance. Their main tool for motivating you to give them your time is guilt. After spending one hour “counseling” with them, four hours of energy has been drained from your life. Learn to distinguish between the genuinely needy and the chronically needy. Howard Hendricks says, “Don’t meet with anyone who demotivates you.” Meet with anybody for one time but don’t make VDPs a part of your regular schedule.

VRPs (Very Resourceful People). These are people who minister to you–those who recharge your spiritual batteries, refill your spiritual reservoir. It may be a mentor, your pastor, another director, a past director or discipler, or maybe just a good friend. All of us need VRPs in our life. Take time to cultivate these special God-given relationships. If no one is available locally for you to talk with, pick up your cell phone.

As a leader you should probably spend 90% of your time with VIPs, VTPs, and VRPs. I’d also suggest that you make this same guideline for people you minister to in the kingdom of God

THEY UNDERSTANDS THEIR “HINGEPOINTS”

Hingepoints are those small things that we do on a consistent basis that lead to long-term effectiveness. Studies have shown that 80% of the desired results come from 20% of our activities. Hinge-points are high leverage activities which yield a great return for a small amount of time or effort invested. Here are some examples (Think through what good these might accomplish in your life and ministry):

  • Studying a different book of the Bible each month.
  • Weekly appointments with close friends
  • Running 1/2 hour per day.
  • Read one book month.
  • One day with the Lord each month.

THEY KNOW EFFECTIVENESS AND EFFICIENCY

Steven Covey has noted the difference between efficiency and effectiveness. Efficiency deals in the arena of results. Effectiveness pertains to the arena of relationships. Our goal is to be effective with people and efficient in our tasks. Being effective with people takes time. When we try to be efficient with people, it usually backfires on us.

Often it is not having all the answers that is most important but knowing which questions lead to the right answers. Questions are the tools for analysis, diagnosis, and change. Effective leaders know the importance of questions. Here are some examples of good questions:

  • What is one thing you could do, in your personal life or ministry that, if you did on a regular basis, would make a tremendous positive difference in your life or ministry?
  • What are the obstacles or roadblocks that we seem to consistently face that keep us from getting where we want to go?
  • What am I not doing that I should be doing in order to be more effective in ministry?
  • What can I do, that no one else can do, that will really make a material difference in the kingdom of God?
  • What can I contribute that will significantly affect the performance of this ministry, my personal ministry, and the Kingdom of god?
  • What do I do that wastes my time without contributing to my effectiveness?

Ministry is a lesson that is learned daily, seeking God for true guidance is how you will become an powerful and effective leader.

  • My God this is the very thing we are talking to our Kingdom of God about, being effective with efficient. We love when the writer says and explain “Efficiency deals in the arena of results. Effectiveness pertains to the arena of relationships. Our goal is to be effective with people and efficient in our tasks”. We are studying different words pertaining to our assignments. Thank You Lord.

What is one thing you could do, in your personal life or ministry that, if you did on a regular basis, would make a tremendous positive difference in your life or ministry?

As we have learned in our previous studies, As one man wisely stated, “Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of those things which matter least. We react to the urgent, but we need to consciously act to accomplish the important”. Stay consistent with our schedule, our agenda. Sometimes what we have set out to do, often gets interrupted and things tends to become more important, then our schedule is thrown out. God reveal to us that most of the time, when we make a decision to do something productive, change from none working routine, the enemy knows and tries his best to discourage you, throw unforeseen things in the way. But as we are determined we must develop an “don’t care” attitude, meaning no matter what this is how, this is what we are going to do. And the more we approach any kind of interferences we must give it instructions, i.e. no not today, begin to speak those thing not as though they were. This is working for us, because the more we give in to the interruption the more incomplete our schedule will be.

What are the obstacles or roadblocks that we seem to consistently face that keep us from getting where we want to go?

Not believing, no productivity, being consistent in our plans, wondering what people may or may not say; this use to be a huge roadblock, looking at others “get” “accomplish” and wonder what is going on with us. Definitely wrong focus, and we begin to focus on the promises of God, getting in tune with ourcelves, making more reachable goals, taking time to plan, praying for more directions, listening to the sounds of our kingdom of God and taking actions. Decreeing and taking actions, taking actions on what we are decreeing.

What am I not doing that I should be doing in order to be more effective in ministry?

Stepping out on the promises of God, My God, and we stated in our teaching, God is definitely waiting on us, He’s waiting for us to use what He has given us, take the time to put it to use, go for it. Stand on it no matter what, believe in it. God always take us to Zechariah 3:1-2; also, chapter 4, God has revealed this to us so many times. But now, we are taking actions, real actions on it all. We are in a brand-new place, and it does not matter…

What can I do, that no one else can do, that will really make a material difference in the kingdom of God?

We are not sure, but we know that what God has called us to do will definitely make a difference, because we are not normal, we operate in the abnormal state of our being. Although it maybe done with someone else there will always be a uniqueness distinguish about it, from it, in which people shall say; “Oh that’s different”.

What can I contribute that will significantly affect the performance of this ministry, my personal ministry, and the Kingdom of god?

Continue to contribute in our performance in our classes, studying, learning more about our responsibilities for this ministry. Spend more time in developing the aspect of our personal ministry, With this ministry and our personal ministry together we will begin to build the Kingdom of God, both are important and both work together and we will come with effective tools, techniques to contribute to the Kingdom of God.

What do I do that wastes my time without contributing to my effectiveness?

Use to be, “Not knowing, not knowing what to do”, not know who I am, not knowing this or that. Now we are confidence in all we do, taking action, thriving to be affective to effect, taking steps in knowing all we can about our roles, responsibilities in our assignments. Taking time to investigate, research to be the best, be the outstanding abnormal individual, the woman of God, the Prophetic Pastor God has intended me to be.HalleluYAH, we love this.

  • 1: I will have to say studying more day, that means reading mor of the word, and teaching mycellf how to learn more things as well teaching my children. I want to be more consistent to these things s oit can make an difference in my life and minstry. I have got to hit the ground running for God more daily now then ever. Especially what I'm hearing how children are getting abuse it makes my life seem like a little piece of crumb.

2: I will have to say my mind it always want to go back and think back on things or it tries to allow me to forget certain stuff I stuff that I am supposed to do. So my obstacles are my own cellf getting it together so I can go higher. I also don't want to keep talking about it I want to do better with my actions.

3: I'm not doing a lot as I should to e an effective leader. I should be learning my duties and roles daily. I should be more helpful to my leader and my leadershifter. I thank God for allowing me to do better being effective in ministry. Cellf I need you to know that I will be an effective leader to my team I will not be the leader that only care about mycellf and don't help my team. I am an team player and leader.

4: I can just show with my actions that's all I can do differently than others. I am fed up keep expressing mycellf with words towards God and not show any actions  when it comes doing what God desires me to do. Instead I just talk with words no more lipsync time for the actions take effect.

5: I can contribute to more time with God by just doing it no talking about it being about it. For my personal life and ministry both. Thats' the only reason how my performance is going to contribute to my ministry by staying focus. Hard work and dedication, today I watched people put an manufacture home next door to my workplace. I watched how all these Men helped contribute to building this home together. I finally seen how they put it together with two mobile parts of houses together and thats what we must do as well. We must build together.

6: I will have to say nothing at all that I do that allow me to waste my time to my effectiveness in God. That means it's me that it is holding me back and wasting time. I must get to work now I should not be wasting my own time look how that sounds. Let's Get It Together Prophetess Get Moving!!

      • What am I not doing that I should be doing in order to be more effective in ministry? Pay more close attention then before i feel that i have seen lately i havent been paying as close attention as i should have been and thats why everything is so new to me even though i read and did it all before. i feel im waking up my eyes are not close anymore and i feelt thats where God is leading me too opening up more of my awareness and stop walkin with my eyes closed..
      • What can I do, that no one else can do, that will really make a material difference in the kingdom of God? Teach the warriors as well as myself how to stand even in tough times. Because no one teaches the way i dose. I can Build them and remind them of there colors of holiness and i can bring to there remembrance the confidence we need as warriors..To pursue How we have to take the scales covering off our eyes. How we should walk with raise heads how that makes us look when its down what it speaks to others when they see it down like that what its saying to yourself...
